Tips When Kids Want Electronic Gadgets

Posted in Labels: , , ,

It’s never ending; kids always want to get electronic gadgets. They want you to buy them video games and the latest gadget player. They want to get involved in the community of on-line gaming with fees to pay every month.  Your kids wish to buy a mobile phone with the newest features. They want to use a computer, tablet, or laptop.  The list of electronic gadgets your kids want to buy just keeps on coming.  How would parents cope up with the advanced technology? How to distinguish which electronic gadgets can help or not?

Tips for Parents

1.   Accept the reality that with today’s fresher generation, children will always want electronic gadgets to make things different in their lives. Lots of parents believe that mobile phones are a “WANT,” while most teens resist and assert that mobile phones are a necessity.  Be consciously aware about these pressures. Parents should work harmoniously with their children rather than against them.  Remember, there has never been any greater technological selection of electronic gadgets than today.

2.   Make balanced technological wishes of family members.  Do you have sufficient cash to buy a computer for everybody to have access on it?  If this is so, make an effective schedule time to use the computer for all family members to benefit.  If purchasing a computer is not affordable better search for shops where to rent computers at low cost.

3.   Make an encouragement to members of the family to communicate with relatives and extended family using electronic gadgets.  Mobile phones, email, or texting can make the communication easier.  But there's a caution when using these electronic gadgets: kids should not use them to strangers.

4.   Be truthful and realistic.  Although kids want electronic gadgets, buy only what is affordable and what can your child contribute.  It’s a lesson to learn for kids to save money in order to buy something they need.

5.   The number of hours in front of a TV or computer should be limited.  What do experts recommend and vouch for? No more than 2 hours every day for kids to watch the television, play video games, use the computer, or listen to MP3s.

Parents with Children from birth to 5 years old

1.   Although kids want electronic gadgets, they should not have technological access to certain gadgets until they are 2 or 3 years of age.  As much as possible, always keep gadgets or technology outside their reach.  Still the most important thing to do is playing around.

2.   Lots of parents present the television to young kids to avoid tantrums especially during rush hours. If this is so, then pick only what is appropriate, helpful and educational.  Choose child-friendly TV shows. Keep a monitoring routine and limit the number of hours as much as possible to two hours only.

3.   Almost all pre-schoolers would ask for hand-held electronic video games. Understand that games virtually require reading skills for children that pre-schoolers don’t yet develop.  However, if you wish to buy video games for them, get one with early childhood (EC) rate.

4.   It is a must that parents of today’s generation should join their children’s use of electronic gadgets and technology.  Join them while watching TV, be their companion when playing video games.  Because kids always want electronic gadgets, introduce ones that are only constructive to their learning.

Technology will always be an inescapable part of kids’ lives—kids who want electronic gadgets. While children love to get and own gadgets for themselves, it is still up to the parents whether or not to buy video games, cell phones, computer or any electronic gadgets for their kids' best interest.

Technology and Family – How Technology Changes our Family Meals Together

Posted in Labels: , , ,

Technology and family are getting along with each other.  Often, technology gives comfort, entertainment and important information for the whole family.  But how about the not-so-good consequences? Is technology always good to use? Is it building up the members or putting them at risk? What's the effects of technology on family time?

What has become very impressive from the current years is the way technology understands and measures one’s brain.  There’s a quick pace of modernization leading technology in all areas of our lives. With all probability, the current digital age has been modifying our lifestyle—how we reason out and act together.

iPods, PDAs, Tablets, Laptops, mobile phones—these are among the gadgets that punish our wallets introduced by technology to a family.  Obviously, they are changing our family’s condition and are putting unhealthy effects in our relationship and interactions. Eating meal together is a traditional practice but it has now been a forgotten routine.  Technology has made it happen to families.

Research survey shows that regular family meals creates positive influence on teens. Eating together is linked with developed values, intimacy, and knowing family members better.  Adolescents who don’t eat with parents have the tendency to develop behavioral problems.  These may include taking drugs, being aggressive, getting academic problems, suicidal attempts, or sexual activity.

Today, advanced technology has made the family dinner time an out-dated, least important household practice.  Gone are the days of longer conversations with laughter and jokes.

We may recall discussing about things during dinner time: homework, sports, job, and ourselves.  Members of the family were feeling comfortable, keeping up each others' lives while maintaining eye-eye contact.

Unfortunately, dinnertime now becomes nothing but a self-quick-time eating routine.  With busy net surfing, uploading, emailing, chatting, television viewing, there's no more time left for each member.   How does technology affect family communication? Technology makes a family undergo certain detachment.

Mostly, if there’s time to eat together, everyone would eat fast and leave others in the table. Everyone goes back immediately to his PC, mobile phone, or internet games.

Family dinners should be an opportunity to give relationship setting for the teens and kids.  This is the time to build up conversations, social skills, good manners, and intimacy among themselves.

Even if there’s time to eat dinner together, there are conflicts appearing and pressures begin to take place.  Rather than making it a time to bond, technology makes it a family time of conflicts and quarrels.

Have you experienced yourself shouting at your son, “Stop that video games in your room and let’s talk together.”  To a certain degree, genuine interactions with real family members are compromised.  Sad to admit but technology has made family fragmented this far.

Admittedly, our technology has greatly created amazing things: converse with anyone around the globe, give huge information, online jobs, advanced media, and a lot more.  However, the risky impact comes when technology makes a family poisoned.  Technology, at certain level, has all the opportunities to pollute the human brains and spirits, especially children’s.

So how to raise children with modern technology?  As parents, you should think that the ones at risk in terms of technology are your children and whole family. Ponder about how this life is changing yours and others.  Ask yourself, “How technology and internet affect our family? Is it making my family intact or is it fracturing our happy relationship?  Employ some precautionary measures for your loved ones.  Prioritize family activities in building up relationship which the internet can't give.

Risks in Using Internet and Technology – Watch What Your Kids are Doing Online

Posted in Labels: , , ,

As protective parents, we should teach our children the risks in using the internet.  There are risks in talking to someone they don’t know online.  But how we allow them to sit in front of a computer for long hours not knowing who they are conversing with?  Children can easily be influenced by anyone, anytime.  Their young minds are wide-open for risks in using the internet and technology.

The best place to position a personal computer is an open area—like living room—where every member of the family can find way to view the computer’s monitor.  Parents can make suggestions what sites kids should surf to avoid the risks. Part to track their kid’s online activities is by walking around where the computer is installed.  From time to time it is important to see what the kid is doing. The risks of using internet are almost there to devour our children if parents are not alert.

There are dangers when our children surf the net, send messages, or video chat with some strangers online.  Children can reach the internet risks while researching, exploring, playing games or getting entertained online.  Also, when there’s sharing of important information like address, contact number, birth date, or other personal information, that is how troubles continue.  Parents should not feel unworried that their kids are safe from the internet risks although they are inside their home.

Apprehensive parents have the responsibility to ensure that their kids are protected from the risks of technology while online.  Keep in mid, there are more dangers in using the internet than we can realize it.  It is not an excuse that parents are too busy to allow children to surf by themselves only.

When you doubt what your child’s doing online then make careful surveillance.  There are cases where kids instantly cover the monitor with their body when you see them.  They might have gone to discover the risks in using internet making them feel differently. Probably, they are sending or watching unacceptable messages or videos that are private.  In these circumstances you can have a dialogue with your child.  Explain to them what risks and dangers they can get from the internet and technology.  There are many predators whose only purpose is to find prey in internet and small kids are their main target.

Just like adults, children have things to hide while using the internet.  They maybe venting out to a friend that concerns you.  There are also cases they found someone they don’t know.  It is surprising how strangers can make research online for innocent children to be their victims.  These internet risks need immediate intervening of a parent.  We should have the commitment to protect our children every day until they are finally capable of looking after themselves.

Surfing the internet is thrilling and full of fun for children and parents alike.  We don’t allow our kids to read or watch adult contents on magazines or televisions.  Unluckily, there are lots of them in the internet and they are easily accessible any moment.  These are the risks in using internet and technology.  Kids are prone to go to places they are not supposed to be. For protective measures parents may filter or block those sites suspected as inappropriate.

Technology -- 10 Ways to Protect Your Family’s Privacy on Social Networking Websites

Posted in Labels: , , ,

Over the last couple of years, social networking websites like Twitter, Facebook, Digg and others have been extremely emerging in popularity.  Most people are enjoying logging on to these sites, but are the users disclosing more than what is necessary?  Are social networking websites safe for your private information?  Does technology give risks to parents, children and family?

Social Networking Defined

Social networking is the 21st century’s trend in communication.  Primarily, social networking is enjoyable to use. It helps people to get in touch with each other via sharing images and videos, chatting with friends and loved ones, and sharing personal information.  All of these are done on-line. Social networking websites perform as on-line community for internet users.  Account owners share common interest once they start socializing on-line.  It involves having access on other members’ profiles and personal information, probably to even personally call them.

Dangers of Social Networking Websites

Inside the home each member of the family, especially children, can become the predator’s targets. Many strangers and stalkers abuse the use of these sites.  Smart predators can save information about different users.  These are the information always uploaded and input by users making them globally available.  They are subject to theft and can be shared and sold by strangers to other people.

Safety Guidelines for Family Members

1.   Do only what’s comfortable for you.  Feel good and happy with what you’re doing on social networking websites.  Your peers and other people should not force you in any way to do what they do on-line.  If they put their contact numbers, this does not mean you have to put yours as well.

2.   Think many times before deciding to publish your identifying information.  Some of which may include your complete name, contact numbers, address, or card numbers.  If you wish to upload upload images of your school, home or office, make sure they are needed in your profile.

3.   Choose a user name not related to your private information.  “Peternewjersey” or “georgemarch27” would be very risky choices in social networking websites.

4.   Create another email account, one which does not reveal your real name.  Use this in signing up and receiving email messages.  Anytime you decide to stop your connection, it is easy for you to stop using that email account.  You can create your account with Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo Mail.  There are, however, other existing providers you can choose from.

5.   Always use passwords that are strong. It is highly recommended to use combinations of numbers and letters.

6.   Always log off each time you leave social networking websites.  Your profile should be kept closed all the time.  Only trusted friends should be allowed to get access to your profile.

7.   Everything that goes on-line will stay on-line.   Avoid unnecessary chatting or publishing images and video clips that are embarrassing.  Keep in mind that once information is published, you can’t hold it back anymore.  You may have deleted it, but older versions still exist on other computers.  In general, any words you don’t want to speak against anyone, never say them on-line.

8.  Don't ignore privacy settings. Learn more to master social networking websites. These are options to restrict unfamiliar persons whose purpose is to access your profile.  Always scrutinize the people you would accept as friends before joining them to your network community.

9.   Be very cautious about phishing (identity theft) scams where strangers lead users to  imitate websites in order to divulge private information like passwords and usernames.

10.  Trust your own judgement. If you think you or your children are being endangered by other online users, report the incident to a police including the social networking websites.  You or your family members could be spared from the hands of people seeking only for prey.

Conclusion

Social networking websites have the “friends of friends” feature.  After sharing your peculiar information, you can regularly communicate within a community or across the world.  While your circle of friends becomes larger, family members will also increase publicity to strangers.  These are people who have other intentions.

There are always stalkers around the web who steal information and identity.  Children, parents and everyone are vulnerable to this condition.  For wise advice, take into consideration the above guidelines.  They will help you enjoy activities on social networking websites, and avoid some of the risks of technology.

How Technology and Internet Separate Parents from Children?

Posted in Labels: , , , , , ,

Do you wonder how technology and internet is separating parents from their children? Is it becoming more difficult to turn off your life from this present condition in favor of your kids and family life?

Nowadays, almost everybody is totally linked with technology and internet and parents can’t almost switch off their gadgets.  They reach for an iPhone or BlackBerry first thing in the morning and the final thing in the evening, and countless times during the day.  Parents visit their Facebook page to see more updates and they become gradually changing their lifestyles to social networking.

We get involved so much in technology and internet without realizing how much we may ignore our little children.  But our kids observe our actions all the time.   Our children can view our reliance on the internet, mobile phones and other new gadgets.  It is evident how many people are becoming more distant because of the present technology and internet doings.  Worse, our effective and natural communication has diminished.

No wonder why younger kids and tweens are emailing and texting just like professionals; technology and internet has made these things possible.  Parents trained them to do it.  We trained them the value of these communication gadgets: how to use a mobile phone, text, email, use on-line.  All these things can’t just be taken for granted.
How surprising it is to realize that most parents now have lost the capability to literally connect with their children.  Parents pass the buck by saying it’s the kid’s mistakes.  With these technology and internet, kids are the ones whose ears are plugged with ear buds and eyes fixed on computer monitors.  But like virtually all things they do, they got trained into these habits from the parents.  Kids' lack of communication comes from a parent’s missing communication which is diverted to technology and internet activities.

It is perceived that parents have not indeed lost the desire to connect, train and love their kids.  It is actually not knowing how to make links to bond with their modern children.  Unfortunately, our fast increasing technology and internet activities have made a disconnected communication between parents and their kids.

What better tips to re-open the communication lines between parents and kids than to go back to the old traditional family quality time bonding.  Probably the most important guidelines for disconnected parents is to begin smiling, hugging, conversing with your children.  This could be done by prioritizing your kids' needs and putting aside technology, internet, gadgets, and computer.  These may not be enough for your children but at least kids will realize parents give them more importance than their inbox and phone calls.

No one can deny it, it’s already the technology and internet world that make people driven.  Parents and children within a family are involved to this phenomenon.  However, there are still things which the internet and technology cannot do nor replace: it is the natural way of communicating with children with parents embracing, touching, and kissing them.

Technology and Internet: DOs and DONTs for Children and Parents

Posted in Labels: , , , ,

Our society is a world of progressive technology and internet based activities.  Like adults, children also become part of it.  As parents, we prepare our young kids to enter into a workforce of computers in their daily living.  There are many benefits they can get for this but certainly there are some which are not good.  Find out the DOs and DONTs when using today's technology and internet:

Top 5 DOs

1.   Make it a quality time.  Parents should be around with the child’s experience.  They should interact with them while exploring with the advanced technology and internet activities.  If you join a child, you share his joys of new understanding and accomplishments.

2.   Select good software.  Choosing good software gives importance to your child’s age, abilities, interest, likes and dislikes.  This is very necessary for his or her skills development.  There are lots of educational sites to guide your child to optimize learning with the help of technology and internet.

3.   Get computer game activities.  Games should be linked to real-life circumstances and activities.  Motivate children to connect their games to life’s experiences. Games will enrich children with vocabulary in many different fields. They will learn how to analyze logically and become alert in their visual and mental abilities.

4.   Identify various activities showing kid’s interests.  While using technology and internet, help your child build up his talents and skills that will best benefit his over all growth.  You can expose him to drawings, images, paintings, videos, fashion.  Or you can offer options for cooking, working, doing sports—the list actually is never ending.

5.   Give opportunity to your child to try challenges. There are many activities of discoveries in today’s technology and internet.  Instill a desire to progress continuously in technical matters related to his living.  Maintain an atmosphere of fun and not concentrating on hard studies alone.  Children should be happy enough to handle difficult things but at the same time learn to overcome challenges.

Top 4 DON'Ts

1.   Computers must not take place the traditional childhood activities.   Modern technology and internet activities involve sitting, watching, texting, and net surfing.  Because of these, significant experiences related to their psychological, physical, and social development are ignored.  They are still kids and they need all good experiences in their growing years.

2.   Daily using computers should not go beyond 1 hour.  Parents should limit the use of computer to 1 hour and allocate suitable time table.  Young children need more various experiences such as playing, touching, embracing, exercising and others.  All of which may not be experienced in the latest technology and internet services.

3.   Below 1-year-old children must not use computers. Their sense of sight is still sensitive and refined.  Toddlers are just starting to develop their motor capabilities.  They need to wait until they reach the right age of one year old.  Only then can they start accepting loads of information about the things around them.

4.   Don’t scold or punish children.  If they fight because of a computer, parent should avoid being harsh.  The best thing to do is give each of them allotted time.  If they know how to wait for their time, neither will they misbehave nor fight.  They’ll learn the value of patience and sharing.  However, if they’re using the computer, you can help by not disturbing them.  Like adults, they need also concentration while on-line.

Instant access and unlimited information are the benefits of using today’s high technology and internet activities.  Children of this generation are born to explore and enjoy them.  With the proper guidance and continuous assistance, parents can provide many technical experiences to their growing children.

Parents on Facebook: Can Kid’s Accept Them as “Friends”

Posted in Labels: , , ,

While technology and Internet make more parents sign up daily, more children shy away at the idea of adding a parent as a “friend” on their Facebook account.   In this present day, more have formed support communities to use this new trend of social networking. If your child is 21 years old, accepting a mom or a dad on Facebook is probably to lower his or her calmness quotient.  You become a Big Brother, and your kid’s friends will perhaps edit their messages and images.  They’re afraid of being viewed and criticized.

This is the problem going on in your child's brain when a friend request from mom or dad pops up. Accepting parents would mean danger of being separated by their peers.  Ignoring them means there’s a threat of getting grounded.

Parent's DO's and DON'T's on Facebook

1.   Make a close relationship with the kid.  The most horrible thing you can make is surprise attack your child.  Discuss with your kid about Facebook prior to signing up.  Know how they would feel about being your friend.  Put up some limitations like not writing on their Facebook wall which could cause any embarassment.

2.   Ask your child to assist you set up your account.  This becomes a quality bonding time for both of you.  Normally, the younger the kids, the more they know about technology and internet.  Not only it benefits the parents, it also gives a way of becoming a friend on your kid’s network.

3.   Never get hurt by denial.  If your child says he’s not comfortable to accept you, then make efforts to be brave.  This won’t be the last part of the world, though.  Trusting your kids allows them personal privacy.  If they accept parents, children may feel like having them listening to their phone calls.  It is simply uncomfortable although other children never mind it at all. The rejection may hurt, but you still can connect in other ways.

4.   Realize some restrictions.  In short, if your child accepts you as a friend, don't automatically think you now know everything about him.  Facebook lets users to restrict some images and messages. You may be both friends, but some images and videos may be restricted and you can’t see all the crazy and wild messages.

5.   Create a network with your friends.  Try also to connect with your friends.  Facebook has a search engine where you can easily find long-lost friends.  Just type their names or email address.   Warning: this is extremely addictive.  You’ll see yourself trying to recall the name of your 6th grade friend. It’s great when your "friend" request is accepted. Facebook is indeed a social networking site for you.

6.   Monitor children's activity in the internet.  This is an across the board application, not only on Facebook.  For tweens, it's recommemded to put the computer in an open area where you can view their internet activities.  They can lock you out from knowing everything they have on Facebook, but you can see in their monitors how they work online.

In this generation, Facebook is a great social networking site for you and your children.  But don't anticipate for it to progress much your relationship.  Use this latest technology and internet to connect with your friends on Facebook.   As for connecting with your children, save that for every day activities with them!

Technology: The Dark Side of Internet for the Children

Posted in Labels: ,

Parents, guardians, or teachers have the responsibility to educate their children regarding the usefulness of the Internet and technology as well as the threats it may give them.  The young should know how to safeguard themselves because certainly there is a dark side of it.

When using the computer, it is not only school research that they should know about, like a nation’s history and other research topics. Most importantly, children need to be careful on other things involved, such as when chatting and viewing the webcam.  There are strangers who take advantage of the opportunity and wish to meet with them shortly after chatting.  Through the present technology, many innocent are now handed over to the hands of abusers, kidnappers, and killers.

What the Internet offers to everyone, not excluding a child, is the readily accessible to adult websites.  They abound in explicit adult materials displayed in images, videos clips and other multi-media devices.

So what should be done in order to cope with these technology threats?

1.   In order to block the possibility of early discovery, parents must discuss with them things that concern about human life.  It may begin with mating, conception, birth to growth.

2.   They may explain why there's a need to value their human body, life and privacy.  A human body is to be preserved and protected primarily by the child himself.   With enough knowledge, a young child can do it.

3.   They should elaborate the dangers of certain viewable materials that exploit those models resulting to harassment and abuse.  Provide quick explanations about the dangers they are exposed to and how these materials can pollute their young minds.

4.   They can further discuss why parents and adults alone can view them and that why young kids are not allowed.  Protective parents are the ones in authority who can help them get saved from the unlikely problems coming from technology and industry.

5.   Today, parents can now join their offspring while surfing the Internet using their computers and laptops. They can join them in their own rooms while having fun in cyberspace adventures. There are lots of fun that can be shared together by the members of the family.

6.   Furthermore, the most popular social networking websites like Facebook, Tweeter, Myspace can be worked together enjoyably by both parties.  They may send texts, tweets, messages and become companions of their son’s and daughter’s on-line computer savvy.

Minors undoubtedly are not spared from this global danger brought by the internet. With such fast improving technology, it seems that everything can now be opened and becomes exposed at our fingertips.  In this case, parents should do something to ensure total protection against the dark side of Internet.
