Parenting : How to Train & Discipline Children in This Modern World

Posted in Labels: , , , , , , ,

Children training and discipline is a parenting theme that has been angrily discussed in current years.   A great deal of this reason came from the term 'discipline.’ This displays a portrait of difficult and cruel punishment in the minds of most parents.  Undeniably, the dispute has made many parents of today to choose and accept a parenting approach that is “extremely permissive.”

We all need training and discipline in our lives.  However, parents have to know what is good and bad behavior, and what things to do and not to do.  We also recognize that there are lots of things in life to do, even if we don't want to.

What to Do in Training and Discipline

1.   Truth is none of us is born with self discipline and training.  This is something our kids have to learn early and regularly.  As for the parents, appropriate training and discipline must be something they should know first in order to teach their children.

2.   One lesson parents have to find out is that training and disciplining kids is done individually. Remember also that one parenting style that works for a child does not essentially become suitable with another child.

3.   Parenting styles should help to realize that training and discipline requires a link to a child's degree of understanding. In most part, this is a role of age.  But remember each child develops at different rates.   So it’s crucial that kids' needs are to be taken into consideration.

4.   Any response to bad behavior has to be fitting to the age of children.  Response given in training and discipline should be effective for the individual child. Understand why there is a misbehavior--mostly, kids are in need of missing attention that's why they do it.

5.   Children training and discipline is not all the time acceptable if it only highlights punishments.  For kids this isn’t going to work.  Teaching them a lesson will always go a long way; imposing punishment will scare them.  However the training and discipline lesson parents are teaching them is not well understood.

6.   If a parent is angry while training and disciplining the child, the kid comprehends not the lesson but the anger.  It's the anger which is very exhausting but not helpful that instilled in the mind of a child.

Applying Logical Consequences

Alternatively, the use of “logical consequences”--proven to be an effective form of training and discipline--won’t require lots of emotional energy on parents. This makes sense to children, too.  Our kids don't need punishment but unconditional love. What punishment, in any form, cannot do to the kids, love will always do.  Try to link discipline and training to a logical or natural flow.  Thus, it enables parents to choose the most suitable type of children training and discipline.

Learn this, parents: Our kids are given to us for protection and love.  Along this is the parenting responsibility to raise them the right way.  It 's our role to figure out the best parenting approach to apply.  It starts with loving them unconditionally. The training and discipline you give should always involve in loving and not hurting. No matter what, they deserve to be loved and respected like adults. This is what parents are called for.

Technology and Internet: DOs and DONTs for Children and Parents

Posted in Labels: , , , ,

Our society is a world of progressive technology and internet based activities.  Like adults, children also become part of it.  As parents, we prepare our young kids to enter into a workforce of computers in their daily living.  There are many benefits they can get for this but certainly there are some which are not good.  Find out the DOs and DONTs when using today's technology and internet:

Top 5 DOs

1.   Make it a quality time.  Parents should be around with the child’s experience.  They should interact with them while exploring with the advanced technology and internet activities.  If you join a child, you share his joys of new understanding and accomplishments.

2.   Select good software.  Choosing good software gives importance to your child’s age, abilities, interest, likes and dislikes.  This is very necessary for his or her skills development.  There are lots of educational sites to guide your child to optimize learning with the help of technology and internet.

3.   Get computer game activities.  Games should be linked to real-life circumstances and activities.  Motivate children to connect their games to life’s experiences. Games will enrich children with vocabulary in many different fields. They will learn how to analyze logically and become alert in their visual and mental abilities.

4.   Identify various activities showing kid’s interests.  While using technology and internet, help your child build up his talents and skills that will best benefit his over all growth.  You can expose him to drawings, images, paintings, videos, fashion.  Or you can offer options for cooking, working, doing sports—the list actually is never ending.

5.   Give opportunity to your child to try challenges. There are many activities of discoveries in today’s technology and internet.  Instill a desire to progress continuously in technical matters related to his living.  Maintain an atmosphere of fun and not concentrating on hard studies alone.  Children should be happy enough to handle difficult things but at the same time learn to overcome challenges.

Top 4 DON'Ts

1.   Computers must not take place the traditional childhood activities.   Modern technology and internet activities involve sitting, watching, texting, and net surfing.  Because of these, significant experiences related to their psychological, physical, and social development are ignored.  They are still kids and they need all good experiences in their growing years.

2.   Daily using computers should not go beyond 1 hour.  Parents should limit the use of computer to 1 hour and allocate suitable time table.  Young children need more various experiences such as playing, touching, embracing, exercising and others.  All of which may not be experienced in the latest technology and internet services.

3.   Below 1-year-old children must not use computers. Their sense of sight is still sensitive and refined.  Toddlers are just starting to develop their motor capabilities.  They need to wait until they reach the right age of one year old.  Only then can they start accepting loads of information about the things around them.

4.   Don’t scold or punish children.  If they fight because of a computer, parent should avoid being harsh.  The best thing to do is give each of them allotted time.  If they know how to wait for their time, neither will they misbehave nor fight.  They’ll learn the value of patience and sharing.  However, if they’re using the computer, you can help by not disturbing them.  Like adults, they need also concentration while on-line.

Instant access and unlimited information are the benefits of using today’s high technology and internet activities.  Children of this generation are born to explore and enjoy them.  With the proper guidance and continuous assistance, parents can provide many technical experiences to their growing children.

Parents on Facebook: Can Kid’s Accept Them as “Friends”

Posted in Labels: , , ,

While technology and Internet make more parents sign up daily, more children shy away at the idea of adding a parent as a “friend” on their Facebook account.   In this present day, more have formed support communities to use this new trend of social networking. If your child is 21 years old, accepting a mom or a dad on Facebook is probably to lower his or her calmness quotient.  You become a Big Brother, and your kid’s friends will perhaps edit their messages and images.  They’re afraid of being viewed and criticized.

This is the problem going on in your child's brain when a friend request from mom or dad pops up. Accepting parents would mean danger of being separated by their peers.  Ignoring them means there’s a threat of getting grounded.

Parent's DO's and DON'T's on Facebook

1.   Make a close relationship with the kid.  The most horrible thing you can make is surprise attack your child.  Discuss with your kid about Facebook prior to signing up.  Know how they would feel about being your friend.  Put up some limitations like not writing on their Facebook wall which could cause any embarassment.

2.   Ask your child to assist you set up your account.  This becomes a quality bonding time for both of you.  Normally, the younger the kids, the more they know about technology and internet.  Not only it benefits the parents, it also gives a way of becoming a friend on your kid’s network.

3.   Never get hurt by denial.  If your child says he’s not comfortable to accept you, then make efforts to be brave.  This won’t be the last part of the world, though.  Trusting your kids allows them personal privacy.  If they accept parents, children may feel like having them listening to their phone calls.  It is simply uncomfortable although other children never mind it at all. The rejection may hurt, but you still can connect in other ways.

4.   Realize some restrictions.  In short, if your child accepts you as a friend, don't automatically think you now know everything about him.  Facebook lets users to restrict some images and messages. You may be both friends, but some images and videos may be restricted and you can’t see all the crazy and wild messages.

5.   Create a network with your friends.  Try also to connect with your friends.  Facebook has a search engine where you can easily find long-lost friends.  Just type their names or email address.   Warning: this is extremely addictive.  You’ll see yourself trying to recall the name of your 6th grade friend. It’s great when your "friend" request is accepted. Facebook is indeed a social networking site for you.

6.   Monitor children's activity in the internet.  This is an across the board application, not only on Facebook.  For tweens, it's recommemded to put the computer in an open area where you can view their internet activities.  They can lock you out from knowing everything they have on Facebook, but you can see in their monitors how they work online.

In this generation, Facebook is a great social networking site for you and your children.  But don't anticipate for it to progress much your relationship.  Use this latest technology and internet to connect with your friends on Facebook.   As for connecting with your children, save that for every day activities with them!

Multi-Tasking Parents: How to Cope with Daily Pressures

Posted in Labels: , ,

Despite the modern generation, and the many latest innovations to make life easier and faster, stress remains troubling our lives, especially parents.  That’s why the term “multi-tasking” is commonly used and heard in every home.

Under many circumstances, parenting is truly stressful, more so when mothers or fathers always undergo pressures and anxieties.  You may have a child or five children, and you work outside or just stay at home.  All parents have 24/7 period to finish their jobs.  This multi-tasking process is very demanding and exhausting.

Most mothers do the household chores like preparing meals, helping in homework, getting their children off to school, doing office work, and others.  The 24 hours can just go by and they're wondering why time is so fast.  Parents don’t seem to have accomplished anything.

Today is a very busy world; do something to keep yourself in balance.  Don’t just hurry around the entire day, with nothing to enjoy for yourself.  Here is what to do in your multi-tasking jobs:

Use a Daily Program and Keep It

1.   Using a day-to-day schedule and keeping it will help alleviate pressures.  A fixed schedule shows you’re a systematic parent in terms of running your life and your home.  Most of the household troubles come from disorganized tasks and stuffs inside the home.  The more things you handle every day, the more systematic and structured you should be.

2.   In setting up your schedule, make sure to incorporate all the activities you do daily.  These include meals, housework, bedtimes, and activities after school.  Make it a daily routine as much as possible. This schedule is good in handling multi-tasking jobs.

3.   Get up and go to bed regularly and at the same time.  Using a habitual waking up and sleeping time can definitely reduce stress.  It promotes peaceful sleep and it’s conducive to health. Studies show that children are healthier and tend to behave more when they get accustomed to certain habits.

Use Family Time Management

1.   Take time together.  Most parents do feel that 24 hours is not really enough for them.  Compared to the amount of time spent in simple cooking or pulling out board games, you use less time doing them than talking on your mobile phone, watching TV, playing videos, etc.  If both parents and children could take time together, it becomes a time to bond together and de-stress themselves.

2.   Know also your priorities.  Certainly, it is the family’s needs that should be given main concern. The busier you are, the more you should spend quality time with one another.  Once or twice a week is good enough. Why? Because doing so will help you cope with the daily hassles.

Very busy parents doing multi-tasking jobs deserve a quality break.  It recharges the mind, body and spirit.  If you’re a busy parent who gets annoyed all the time, then give yourself a good thing.  You deserve a good favor—take time to have a break and make fun.

Quarreling Parents and the Bad Effects to Their Children

Posted in Labels: , , ,

Many husbands and wives are quarreling parents; they lose their patience easily.  They always end up into enraged emotional fights and shouting.  Without any intentions, quarreling parents showing the scene in front of the children will harm the latter’s mental condition.  Little kids generally are very sensitive that’s why it’s easy for them to get affected by their parents’ warfare.

Think about the Children

Marriage displays its ups and downs, very similar in a normal relationship.  Marriage is no bed of roses. Quarreling parents occasionally is a vital part of this game.  They may ignore their parenthood when it comes to fighting each other.  They throw devastating words reciprocally that hurt both of them. Worse, guiltless children are not spared of this psychological and emotional effects resulted from the fight.

Children basically are receptive, very sharp-eyed and alert.  They are fast to pick up about pressures and tensions.  Despite this, young children are not yet ready to grasp things realistically.  They are not smart at identifying the cause.  Hearing loud yelling and slamming the doors, they wonder, “is it because of me?”

The world of children does revolve in the activities of parents.  A father and a mother serve as protection and security for the young.  Supposedly, they must give constant sense of confidence that their love is unsinkable.  Grumbling of hostility between  quarreling parents will leave a feeling of insecurity to children.  They find feelings of uncertainty and think whether the fight has something to do with them, the children.

Tips for Fighting Parents

Here are some tips parents need to consider when fighting:

  1. Do you want people to watch your embarrassing fight?  Put yourself in the shoes of your little children.

  2. Take time, each of you, to calm down before talking about the big problem.  When dealing with anger, counting 1 to 10 is a proven effective technique.  Never settle a dispute when angry.

  3. It is not helpful when the two you would fight by fire.  Voice raising, door slamming, or putting blame on the other partner will aggravate the situation.

  4. If issues need to get resolved, wait until the children are asleep.  Never let them hear quarreling parents and what is it you’re fighting for.

  5. In case you have big fight in front of them, let kids understand that they are not to be blamed on such condition.  Explain further that sometimes parents fight, but still they love each other.

  6. Explain that losing your temper is a work of mistake, and that there are many things said that both parents really don’t mean. It happens because they’re both angry.

  7. Do your best as parents to reconcile as soon as possible in order to display unity and normal front to the children.

Fighting as couples is normal and it happens in every family.  However, to fight positively matters most especially when there are innocent eyes and ears witnessing the scene.  Would you still be quarreling parents and couple fighters?  Sure, you will.  But next time, make it right and spare your children from the harmful effects!
